I would love to travel! Italy and Germany are right now the two places that I am dying to go see – especially Florence, Italy. The architecture, sculpture, culture, and even the light are so alluring to me. Here are some pictures.
These images are of The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. The Duomo, as it is ordinarily called, begun in 1296 and finished in 1436, was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio. The dome was engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. It is a beautiful piece of architecture.
Another beautiful building is the Baptistry. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city, built from 1059 to 1128. It’s three sets of doors are especially well known – they are simply beautiful. A few years ago, when they had been taken down to be cleaned, they toured around the world. We went down to the Art Institute of Chicago to see them. Here are some pictures.
The south set of doors designed by Andrea Pisano.
The north set designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti.
The East set also designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti and christened by Michaelangelo, The Gates of Paradise.
Art, as far as it is able, follows nature, as a pupil imitates his master; thus your art must be, as it were, God’s grandchild.
Quoted from Dante Alighieri, one of those baptized here.
